Detroit Artist Matthew Loflin Davis Announces Show at Detroit's 4731 Gallery, Opening November 15, 2003

Detroit, MI – November 7, 2003 – Detroit's 4731 Gallery will host a large cross-section of Matthew Loflin Davis' work in a one-man show opening November 15, 2003, and closing November 30, 2003. The show will include a custom installation of Davis' rock sculptures, which have been the subject of much attention since the artist began building them on Belle Isle in July, as well as his metal sculptures and photography. On November 28, Davis will hold a "stack-a-thon" from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., during which he invites the public to join him in stacking rocks in a special outdoor space near the gallery.

"I am so happy about this show," said Davis. "4731 is such an awesome space, and Ric Geyer and Donald Anderson have been so supportive of my work; I consider it an honor and an accomplishment to have a show in their place." Davis referred to Ric Geyer, owner of 4731, and Donald Anderson, who runs the gallery.

"We love Matthew's work," said Anderson. "We love its interactive nature--the way it brings people together. He sees himself not only as an artist, but as a teacher and a public servant--as exemplified by his work on Belle Isle, and the stack-a-thon he will be doing during the show. His work is just plain good for Detroit, and we're proud to be hosting him."

For Davis, the highlight of the show will be the stack-a-thon. "People have been coming down to stack rocks on the island with me since day one," he said, referring to people who have visited his enormously popular installation on Belle Isle. "To me, the great thing about this art form is that anyone can do it, and they can do it anywhere they find rocks. I especially like it when kids visit the island to help me stack stones; it's such a constructive creative outlet for them. We're hoping to have a few field trips show up at the gallery during the stack-a-thon."

Davis encourages area teachers to email him at matthewdavisy2@netscape.net if they are interested in bringing a field trip down to the gallery on November 28. Time on other days can also be arranged.

The 4731 Gallery, located at 4731 Grand River in Detroit is, in the words of Detroit Free Press writer Keri Guten Cohen, "a new kind of art gallery." The gallery, which features shows by local as well as internationally-acclaimed artists, includes studios housing an eclectic mix of Detroit-area artists. You can reach the gallery at 313.894.4731, or by emailing 4731gallery@sbcglobal.net.

Matthew Loflin Davis, a well-known Detroit-area sculptor and photographer, has received overwhelming public support for his work on Belle Isle—so much so that the Mayor’s office intervened to keep his installation there standing when the Detroit Recreation department threatened to take it down. Davis has been featured several times on WJBK Channel 2 news in Detroit, and his work has been covered by WDIV Channel 4 news, the Detroit Free Press, the Ann Arbor News, the Holland Sentinal, and other newspapers nationally. Several Detroit-area art lovers have commissioned him to do stone and metal sculptures.
